The Hush Post: The first Indian woman to win a wrestling gold, Vinesh Phogat reached home from Jakarta on her 24th birthday and another important event in her life. As soon as she reached the IGI airport at New Delhi, she exchanged engagement rings in the parking lot outside the airport with longtime beau and former national-level wrestler Somveer Rathi of Jind.
Vinesh’s uncle Mahavir Phogat and Somveer’s mother were present on the occasion along with other relatives and villagers. The two families welcomed Vinesh as she came out of the airport with the tri-colour and the gold medal around her neck. A cake-cutting ceremony also took place there itself. They clicked pictures and distributed sweets among fans and supporters amidst the beat of dhols, marigold garlands and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slogans.
Somveer said he wanted to solemnise the ceremony on Saturday itself as it was Vinesh’s birthday and thus had to exchange rings hurriedly at the airport, as Vinesh reached New Delhi late at night. Vinesh had earlier posted a picture of herself with Somveer on a social networking site with a caption, “The best decision I ever made! Glad you pinned me for life.” Vinesh and Rathi know each other for the last seven years and both of them are employed with Indian Railways as Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE). Their families also know each other as Vinesh’s uncle Mahavir Phogat and Rathi’s father are both former wrestlers.
