Hush Post: India won its first gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu broke six records in six lifts to finish first in the women’s 48 kg with a combined effort of 196 kg. She broke her own record.

This is her second CWG medal following the silver she won in Glasgow in 2014.

Her achievements went well past the CWG record of 175kg set by Nigeria’s Augustina Nwaokolo in Delhi in 2010.

Saikhom, was in February bestowed with a title of Weightlifter of the Year at the Mahindra Scorpio Times of India Awards (TOISA) for her gold medal winning performance.

The 23-year-old lifter, a senior ticket checker with the Railways had qualified for the CWG with a national record lift of 194kg which got her gold at the World Weightlifting Championships. She is the second Indian after Karnaman Malleswari 22 years ago to do so.

Born in Imphal, Manipur, Saikhom started weightlifting in 2007 after being driven to do so by Kunjarani Devi.
She is being hailed as the successor to India’s first individual woman medalist at the Olympic Games, Malleshwari. Most are looking at her as a potential medalist in the next Olympic Games.
