The Hush post: Normally it’s the male teachers who are often accused of seeking sexual favours from their female students. But here it was vice versa. A female professor in Tamil Nadu has been arrested in a unique sex-for-degrees case.
This Tamil Nadu professor was accused of tacitly asking her students for sexual favours on behalf of university officials in lieu of financial and academic rewards, NDTV reported. She has now been arrested and the investigation of the case has been handed over to a special team.
A 46-year old lady professor of Devanga Arts College was arrested on Tuesday, within 24 hours after the matter became public. She has been booked in a case under the provisions of the IT Act.
The management of the college had been informed about the matter about a month back by students. The college approached the police on Monday only after an audio clip of her conversation with students went viral on social media.
The college has suspended the professor and is holding an internal inquiry against her.
The Madurai Kamaraj University has withdrawn its five-member probe committee after Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who is ex-officio Chancellor of the varsity, set an investigation by a former bureaucrat on Monday. The lady professor, who claimed to be close to the Governor, has denied the allegations.
In the audio clip that went viral on WhatsApp and Facebook, she is promising students “good support financially and academically”, the report said. The students were told not to tell anyone, but then she said the students were free to inform their parents if they wanted to. “If you tell, we can plan accordingly… we can open an account and deposit the money that comes in,” the audio clip mentions.
