The Hush Post: In a good move to encourage children to join studies, kids in a Tamil Nadu village are being offered gold coins, cash, school uniforms and other benefits.

The residents of Konarpalayam village, near Annur in Coimbatore, are promising one-gram gold coin, Rs 5,000 cash and school uniforms for the first 10 children who join their school. The school authorities have adopted this method to boost enrolment in the primary school which had a handful of students. The efforts of villagers bore fruits with several people admitting their children in the school, a report said.

“Three children have joined. Three more students have shown an interest in joining. I will get them tomorrow,” school’s headmaster Rajesh Chandrakumar Y was quoted by The Times of India.

Started in 1996 with 165 students, the school later started recording a drop out of students with several people of the shifting to nearby places due to crop failure. At a time, there were only 10 students in the school. With an increase in demand for English schools, the school’s popularity got drastically reduced. The number of students was reduced to five in the last decade, the report said.

“After I joined five years ago, I could manage to enroll only six students. With the population falling to just 65 families, there was nothing much he could do,” Rajesh Chandrakumar Y was further quoted in the report.

The Tamil Nadu government then decided to close down the schools which had less than 10 students by accommodating teachers and students in neighbourhood schools.

Then Rajesh Chandrakumar Y spoke to the village residents about it, and they decided to lure students or their families with incentives. On Sekar, a businessman named of the village agreed to give one-gram gold coin, and the village head offered Rs 5,000 for the first 10 students. The villagers consulted the education department officials with the idea and received a nod from them. The education officials will be participating in the event organised where students will be handed over the gifts, the report said.
