State broadcaster Prasar Bharati has suspended an official of its Tamil channel citing “disciplinary proceedings”. Apparently, Assistant Director of Chennai Doordarshan Kendra, R Vasumathi, had allegedly blocked the telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at IIT Madras on Monday.
R Vasumathi was assistant director of DD’s Tamil language news channel Podhigai TV. Prasar Bharati has suspended Vasumathi for wilful insubordination. However, the suspension order doesn’t mention the reason.
India Today reported Vasumathi had sent an email to her seniors asking whether the event should be covered live. The authorities sent her an explicit message in response conveying that the events and the speech had to be beamed live.
Prime Minister Modi had visited Chennai on Monday after returning from the US trip. He attended the convocation ceremony of IIT-Madras in Chennai and also addressed the students. However, Podhigai TV did not live telecast the speech.
Reportedly, the DD Assistant Director was playing Tamil language song and drama when PM Modi was addressing the students.
The Prime Minister’s office had sought an explanation for this from the Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar.
