Mahindra XUV300: Powerful, feature-loaded and value for money

The Hush Post

The subcompact SUV segment is the fastest growing segment in the country. Every carmaker is lining up to have a chunk of it. This segment is presently dominated by the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza followed by the Ford Ecosport and the Tata Nexon.

The latest entrant to this segment is Mahindra’s XUV 300. It is by far the most premium and feature-loaded subcompact SUV as of yet from the car maker. It shares the platform with SsangYong Tivoli, but apart from the platform everything else is new.

ENGINE

Mahindra offers XUV 300 in two engine options, the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel. The 1.2 litre petrol engine generates 110 bhp@ 5000rpmand 200 Nm of torque @ 2000-3500 and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 1.5 litre diesel engine generates 115 bhp @3750 rpm and 300 Nm of torque @ 1500-2500 rpm which makes it the most powerful diesel engine in its segment.

However, this engine is also mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox.  The Automatic is not on the offering right now but the rumours are that it will be coming soon. You can choose from four different variants – W4, W6, W8 and W8 (O).

EXTERIORS

The exteriors of XUV 300 are very stylish and contemporary. Look at it from any angle, it is one of the most muscular and attractive looking subcompact SUV in its segment and is definitely a head turner.

  • Cheetah inspired LED DRLs that run through the projector headlamps to the fog lamps
  • The Front Grill is aggressive
  • Floating roof with dual tone roof rails
  • 17 inch sporty alloys
  • 2600 mm wheel base

INTERIORS

The cabin of XUV 300 is one of the most luxurious and well-appointed in the segment. The plastic quality, the fit and finish, the equipment, everything is top notch.

  • The premium leatherette seats
  • Leather wrapped steering and gear knob with a dual tone dashboard
  • 6 way adjustable driver’s seat.
  • New 7-inch touch screen infotainment system offers smartphone connectivity in form of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation and tyre pressure monitoring system.
  • Sunroof and fully automatic dual zone climate control with 3 memory profiles
  • First variable steering system with three modes – Comfort, Normal (default) and Sport and 7 airbags
  • 2 airbags as standard in all other models along with a sunglass holder and a foldable armrest under which you can keep your mobile, your tab, or your wallet.
  • Large bottle holders in all 4 doors with 4 speakers and 2 tweeters.

The rear seat doesn’t get AC vents, which is a disappointment. It offers a boot space of 259 liters which is quite small as compared to its competitors and looking at its long wheelbase, it is a little disappointing. It gets an emergency exit in the boot.

PRICE

Price of XUV 300 starts from Rs 7.90 lakh and goes up to Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India)

COLOR OPTIONS

Mahindra offers six color options in XUV 300

  • Red Rage
  • Sunburst Orange
  • Pearl White
  • Napoli Black
  • DSAT Silver
  • Aquamarine

VERDICT

We would say that Mahindra surely has a winner on its hands. The price for the top end model is more than the top end model of segment leader Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza but XUV 300 is also more features loaded as compared to Brezza, especially the safety features like the 7 airbags.

Moreover, the cabin is well-appointed, fit and finish is of high quality, engine is powerful, and especially the diesel engine and overall looks are also very impressive. Above all, XUV 300 is definitely a value for money product from the house of Mahindra.
