The Hush Post: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has debarred deemed-to- be-Universities to use ‘University’ in their names. It has been done in compliance with the directions  issued by the Supreme Court which  has asked the UGC to take appropriate steps and implement Section 23 of the UGC Act, 1956 and restrain institutions ‘Deemed to be Universities’ from using the word ‘University’. Deemed university, or Deemed-to-be-University, is an accreditation awarded to higher educational institutions in India, conferring them the status of a university so that they can enjoy academic status and privileges of a university. Showing utter disregard to the orders of the apex court and directions of the UGC, some deemed universities are still using the word ‘University’ with their names and have not submitted the alternative proposal. This non-compliance has been viewed ‘very seriously’ by the UGC. It has been decided to give a last chance to the Institution Deemed to be University to immediately discontinue with the name using the word ‘University’ and submit an alternative proposal. Necessary action would be initiated against the Institution Deemed to be University, which may include recommending withdrawal of the declaration notifying the institution as an Institution Deemed to be University to the Central Government.

The names of these seven universities are Symbiosis International University, Pune; Maharishi Markandeshwar university,  Ambala;  Christ University, Bangalore;  Lingaya’s University, Faridabad;  Jain University, Bangalore; Yenepoya University, Mangalore and Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar. Citing the letter to be ‘urgent’, the Commission has allowed 15 days to the universities to abide by the rule. Among other such institutes deemed to be universities are Punjab Engineering College, Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala,  KIIT, TERI School of Advanced Studies, Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Banasthali Vidyapith.
Earlier on November 24, UGC had  suspended engineering degrees awarded by four deemed to be universities through distance mode. The four universities are: JRN Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), Rajasthan; Allahabad Agricultural Institute (AAI) and Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation, Tamil Nadu.
