Chaukori: The sleepy hamlet of Uttarakhand

Alice Guram, Travel @ The Hush Post: Chaukori is a sleepy hamlet in Uttarakhand. At a height of 2,010 m, you can view the beautiful Kumaon hills especially the Nanda Devi and Panchachuli peaks.

How to get there:

Pant Nagar Airport is situated at a distance of 205 km while the nearest railway station is at a distance of 180 km. Almora is the nearest large town.

By Air: Get to Pantnagar and then drive to Chaukori which is 250 kms away. Taxis are easily available.

By Rail: Kathgodam is the nearest railway station. Private cars or taxis will take you to Chaukori which is 198 kms away.

By Road: Tourists can reach Chaukori by bus too. Major cities are well connected with the town. Buses are also available from places like Haldwani and Almora.

Places to see: 

Nakuleshwar Temple:

It is similar to the Khajuraho Temples. This temple does not depict Kumaoni style of architecture.

Patal Bhuvaneshwar:

It is one of the most spiritual and mysterious places of Uttarakhand. Worship at Patal Bhuvaneshwar is equivalent to worshipping at the Char Dham of Uttarakhand.

Arjuneshwar Shiva Temple:

It is one which was built by the Pandava brothers Arjun. Arjun was known for his impeccable archery skills. Situated at a height of nearly 6,000 feet, this is one of the many temples that was built by the Pandavas during their final journey to heaven.

Nagamandir, Berinag:

It is about 10 km from Chaukori and houses a temple dedicated to Sheshnag. It houses the many incarnations of Lord Vishnu. 

Kapileshwar Mahadev:

It is a must visit for pilgrims who are devotees of Lord Shiva. Located within a cave, the great sage Kapil meditated here.

Ghunsera Devi Temple:

It is a delight for historians as it is home to anciently carved shrines almost as far back as the Gupta Age. The stone sculptures and idols are an integral part of Uttarakhandi culture, which places great importance on idol worship.

Best time to visit:

October to March. Winters are the best as the skies are clear and sun-kissed peaks of mountains are a spectacle to view.
