Minister of State Rajen Gohain has been booked on the charges of raping a 24-year-old married woman
The Hush Post: Minister of State (MoS) for Railways Rajen Gohain has been booked by the Assam Police on the charges of allegedly raping a 24-year-old married woman and threatening her. The victim hails from Nagaon district of Assam. Meanwhile, Gohain has retaliated by lodging a complaint of blackmailing against the victim and her family.
This rape case against MoS Gohain was registered on August 2. Gohain’s officer on special duty (OSD) Sanjiv Goswami reportedly said that the MoS has given a complaint of blackmailing against the woman and her family. The OSD even claimed that the rape case against Gohain has been withdrawn.
According to Ananta Das, the officer-in-charge of Nagaon police station reportedly said the woman had pleaded to withdraw the case in the court but the “case still stands, we will do our own investigation”.
Nagaon DSP (Headquarter) Sabita Das said the case was registered against Gohain on 2 August after receiving a complaint at Nagaon police station, a report said.
“We have registered the case. The investigation has already begun and we will proceed as per law,” DSP Das was quoted as saying in the report. But the DSP refused to give details of the case.
A police official from the Nagaon police station said that the case was registered last week and it bears the number 2592/18.
“The FIR was registered under IPC sections 417 (cheating), 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation). We are investigating and have already noted the lady’s statement,” the cop was quoted as saying and adding that the victim has refused to undergo the medical examination.
“The complaint says that the alleged incident took place seven to eight months ago. Both Gohain and the woman knew each other for a long time and the Union minister used to visit her home,” the cop was further quoted.
The police officer said that MoS Gohain had allegedly raped the victim at her home when her husband and other family members were not present, the report said.
On being asked if Gohain would be arrested, the cop said, “We are probing now. If required, the arrest will happen only after the probe is complete.”
Meanwhile, MoS Gohain did not answer the phone himself the media called him up to know about his side of the story. OSD Goswami said the minister “will not speak to the media”.
On being asked about the alleged rape, Minister’s OSD said that it has been withdrawn. “There is no case as of today and as of now,” he was quoted.
When Nagaon police station was contacted, its officer-in-charge Ananta Das said the woman had pleaded to withdraw the case in the court two days of filing it.
“The case still stands and it cannot be withdrawn. We will do our own investigation,” the police station in-charge was quoted.
