A 17-year-girl died after a stalker set her ablaze in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh. The girl, Sandhya, succumbed to her burn injures at the City Hosptial Hospital in Lucknow on Thursday night. She had suffered over 70 per cent burn injuries.
Sandhya hailed from Hajipur village and was set ablaze on Wednesday by her stalker Golu. He had been stalking her for quite some time, the police said.
Golu had barged into Sandhya’s house in Hajipur village while her parents were away, poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. Her sister was in another room and tried to douse the flames.
22-year-old Golu has been arrested. “On the basis of Sandhya’s statement, a case of attempt to murder, trespassing, causing injury by weapons and voluntarily causing hurt was registered against Golu of the same village,” said Kotwali Station House Officer Amber Singh.
News reports say Sandya said in her dying declaration that she had complained to the police about Golu stalking her, but the police did not act. She said her parents had also complained to the police on Tuesday, when Golu had tried to abduct her, but cops did not take it seriously.
Action has been taken against three police personnel who have been sent to the police lines.
