25-year jail term for self-styled Godman on charges of rape of married woman

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on the tantrik

The Hush Post: A fast track court in Mathura has awarded a 25-year-long imprisonment to a self-styled Godman (tantric) on the charges of raping and assaulting a married woman in his ashram at Vrindavan. Convicted tantrik has been identified as Baba Dwarkadas.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convicted man; and if he fails to pay the fine, he would have to undergo further imprisonment of 27 months, Business Standard quoted additional district counsel Praveen Kumar Singh as having said.

The case was transferred from the District Judge’s court to this court and was decided within four months, it has been reported.

A Hathras-based woman had approached the self-styled Godman to get rid of her persistent stomach pain. The woman had reached accused’s ashram at Vrindavan with her husband and four-year-old daughter in July 2017.

The woman was told by a disciple of the Godman (tantriks) to stay in a room in the ashram as the treatment of evil forces would start at 10 PM, Singh reportedly said reading out the complaint of victim woman.

At 10 PM, the victim’s husband was given a kindled earthen lamp with the instruction that he would take it down stairs and return only after the lamp was extinguished.

After that Baba Dwarkadas raped the woman despite her protest, the complaint reads. The woman was told it was part of the cure to eliminate the evil forces, the complaint reads.

Following morning, the victim was again raped on the pretext of cure while her husband was sleeping in the ashram. Later, the accused warned her to keep quiet or else her family would be eliminated, it was reported.

When the couple reached their home in Hathras, next day, the victim gathered courage and narrated the incident to her husband.

Then then couple lodged an FIR against Baba Dwarkadas with Vrindavan Police on July 22, 2017.

During the trial, the victim at the final stage said the rape was committed by some other person, law officer reportedly said.

However, on the basis of evidence, statement of doctor and victim’s previous statement, Baba Dwarkadas was given a 20-year rigorous imprisonment on the charges of rape (section 376 of the IPC), a Rs 20,000 fine and 18 months further imprisonment on failure to pay fine.

Besides, the tantrik has also been awarded four-year rigorous imprisonment on the charges of criminal intimidation (section 506 of the IPC), Rs 4,000 fine and six month further imprisonment on default of payment of fine. Along with this, Baba Dwarkadas has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of one year for cheating with Rs 1,000 fine and three months further imprisonment on non-payment of fine, and the sentences would run one after the other, the law officer was quoted as saying.
