The police have arrested the Editor-in-Chief and CEO of a news channel in Uttarakhand. He faces charges of allegedly putting pressure on one of his reporters to do a sting operation. The intention was to blackmail some politicians, the police said.
The police arrested Samachar Plus CEO Umesh Kumar Sharma from his Ghaziabad residence, ADG (law and order) Ashok Kumar told media persons. The police have brought him to Dehradun and are questioning him.
Journalist Ayush Gaud who works for Samachar Plus channel accused Sharma of threatening to eliminate him. He had failed to do a sting operation, he said.
The FIR accuses Sharma of doing sting operations on senior politicians and bureaucrats to blackmail them.
The police recovered Rs 39.73 lakh in cash, US$ 16,279, 11,030 Thai Baht from Sharma’s office and residence. Besides, the cops also seized a number of mobile phones, pen drives, camera, hard disc, memory cards, i-Pad, and laptop.
Samachar Plus channel runs operations in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. The channel was in the news in 2016 after doing a sting operation on the then Chief Minister Harish Rawat. Rawat was shown negotiating a deal to bribe disgruntled MLAs and buy their support ahead of a floor test in the state assembly.
