Groom’s family cancels marriage on the wedding day saying ‘bride spends too much time on WhatsApp’
The Hush Post: Alleged addiction to WhatsApp resulted in the cancellation of a marriage on the wedding day in the Uttar Pradesh. While groom’s family cited bride’s alleged WhatsApp addiction for cancellation of the wedding, girl’s family alleged the demand of dowry.
The incident occurred in Naugaon Sadat village of the Amroha district last week. The bride’s family was waiting for the bridegroom and his relatives to arrive for the wedding ceremony. But they got a phone call from groom’s side about the cancellation of the wedding. The groom’s family cited bride’s “excessive use of WhatsApp”, a report said.
The bride’s family alleged the reason for the cancellation of the marriage was dowry demand by bridegroom’s side.
According to the police, the bride’s father, Uroj Mehandi, has lodged a complaint against the bridegroom’s family, blaming them for the demand of Rs 65 lakh in dowry.
The girl’s father said he had fixed his daughter’s marriage with the son of Qamar Haidar of Fakeerpura. “Our relatives and friends had gathered to welcome the bridegroom’s family and members of the marriage party. When they didn’t turn up, I telephoned the bridegroom’s father only to be told that they were calling off the marriage,” Mehandi reportedly told the police.
“The bridegroom’s side have claimed that they snapped the marriage, which was to take place on September 5, as the bride had a habit of using WhatsApp excessively, and was sending messages to her in-laws even before the wedding,” report quoted Amroha Superintendent of Police (SP) Vipin Tada as saying.
