A police inspector and three journalists were arrested in Noida on charges of bribery and extortion, police said.
“Journalists Sushil Pandit, Udit Goyal and Raman Thakur were arrested on Tuesday,” SSP Vaibhav Krishna said.
SHO of Sector 20 police station, Noida, Manoj Kumar Pant, was also arrested. Additional SHO, Jaiveer Singh, has been suspended.
He said these four persons were caught red-handed while accepting Rs 8 lakh at the Sector 20 police station.
“They were extorting money from a call centre owner in the name of removing the latter’s name from an FIR registered in November 2018,” SSP Krishna said.
A Mercedes car was seized from the possession of one of the journalists. “Prima facie it seems to be related to some “criminal activity”, the SSP said.
A .32-bore pistol was seized from another journalist, he said.
“All four have been arrested,” the district police chief said.
