On Monday, the Noida Police arrested a woman journalist for allegedly trying to blackmail Minister of State (Independent Charge) for culture and tourism Mahesh Sharma. She claimed to have conducted a “sting operation” on him and caught Sharma accepting a bribe. However, she allegedly demanded Rs 2 crore from the minister.

The incident came to light after Sharma called the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaibhav Krishna. He claimed that the woman, Nishu, had come to his office in Kailash hospital. She said that he should pay her and her associates Rs 45 lakh by the end of the day and an additional Rs 1.55 crore by Wednesday, else they would release the video.

According to the police, a video recording of a conversation between the journalist and Sharma has been recovered. No objectionable content was found. The police said they recovered a piece of paper from the woman, which mentioned the Rs 45 lakh to be provided by evening and other details of suspected extortion.

Nishu works for a local TV news channel, owned by her associate Alok Kumar.

Sharma told the police that he was approached by the woman prior to the elections. He said, “We had come in touch last month when she expressed interest in a door-to-door campaign… It was just a conversation. I got a call from another person in the first week of April claiming they have a video of me talking about money, which was absolutely untrue. It later turned out to be a demand for money”.

Meanwhile, the woman was immediately taken into custody on charges of extortion, cheating and blackmailing.
