In a shocking case, a widow was sold by her father and her aunt, gang-raped by her “keeper” and his friends and then turned away by police when she approached for help. The woman set herself ablaze last month and is now battling for her life in a private hospital in Delhi. She has suffered 80 per cent burns.
The woman was reportedly sold for Rs 10,000 after the death of her husband. The person who “bought” her had taken loans from several people. He used to send the woman to the house of creditors as domestic help who raped her.
On Sunday, Hapur SP Yashveer Singh Yadav said that an FIR had been registered against 14 people. Swati Maliwal, Chairperson, Delhi Commission for Woman (DCW) has taken up her case. She also wrote an appeal to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath seeking justice for the victim.
“DCW is in receipt of a representation from a survivor belonging to Hapur. The survivor has suffered unimaginable harassment at the hand of UP police in Hapur who have refused to register an FIR despite repeated complaint,” read the letter sent by DCW chairperson.
It further read, “The insensitivity and the shameful conduct of the UP police compelled the survivor to immolate herself. She is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi.”
The DCW chairperson’s letter mentions the woman’s ordeal in detail.
The distraught victim tried to immolate herself on April 28. DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal asked the Uttar Pradesh CM to release adequate compensation for the same. She also called for an inquiry against the Hapur police.
In a video of the survivor on social media, the victim can be seen saying, “Police did not take any action and pushed the matter under the carpet by taking money.”
