Sonbhadra massacre: Village head shoots down 9 villagers over land dispute

A dispute over land led to killing of 9 persons in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district on Wednesday. The argument took place between some villagers and the village head of Murtian village panchayat in Ghorawal.

Locals said the people accompanying the village head opened fire on the other faction, leading to death of nine villagers. 25 persons are said to be injured in the incident. The death toll is feared to rise further.

The warring factions attacked each other with sticks too. 6 men and 3 women have died in the incident. Preliminary reports suggest a long pending feud existed between the two factions.

It is reported that the village head had bought 90 bighas land two years ago. He had reached to take possession of the land on Wednesday with large number of his men arriving in tractors. As the villagers opposed the move, the people accompanying the gram pradhan started firing indiscriminately, killing 9 persons.

The Sonbhadra police have arrested two persons in the case so far. Police personnel have been deployed in huge numbers in the Ubhbha village.

UP DGP informed that the land was first bought by a IPS officer of the Bihar cadre. The villagers had opposed him too.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath too had taken cognizance of the matter. He has sought a detailed report of the case.
