A video went viral from Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh where a group of policemen was seen beating and abusing a journalist. The journalist said that he was covering the derailment of the train when a group of railway policemen locked him up and started abusing him.
Amit Sharma, a stringer from TV Channel News 24 said, “They were in plain clothes. One of the cops hit my camera and it fell down. When I picked up my camera, they hit and started abusing me. I was locked up, stripped and they urinated in my mouth.”

Many local journalists reached the spot after learning about the incident. They uploaded the video footage of the policemen beating the journalist on social media. IANS reported that Amit Sharma contacted senior officials at the police headquarters. He was released today in the morning as the other journalists started protesting at the police station.
In one of the videos, the victim journalist Amit Sharma was seen behind the bars explaining what happened to him to his colleagues.
After his release, he said, “10 to 15 days ago, I had done a story on them. They snatched my phone which had footage of the story.”
The senior authorities, who oversees the railway police of UP, said that the railway police SHO and a constable has been suspended.
UP police tweeted, “We have come across a video where a journalist has been beaten up & put in a lock up. DGP Uttar Pradesh OP Singh had ordered for immediate suspension of SHO GRP Shamli Rakesh Kumar and Constable Sanjay Pawar.”
Also, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the state to release a journalist who was arrested for a tweet that had “objectionable comments” on Yogi Adityanath.
