Finally, it has been decided. There is going to be no Priyanka Gandhi Vadra versus Narendra Modi contest from Varanasi. The Congress has decided to field Ajay Rai from Varanasi.
Ajay is a five time MLA from Uttar Pradesh. Rai is a local strong man who began his political career as a member of the Bharatiya Janta Party’s student wing. He won the Legislative Assembly elections from the Kolasla constituency three times in a row between 1996 and 2007 on a BJP ticket.
He left the party after being denied a Lok Sabha ticket. He subsequently joined the Samajwadi Party and unsuccessfully contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
However, the residents of Varanasi, particularly the Congress supporters say that if Congress wanted to field Rai they should have taken such a decision much in advance rather than wait this long. Narendra Modi is a sitting MP from Varanasi and speculations were rife that Priyanka might challenge him this time round.
