An incident of triple talaq over phone occurred in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. A woman has alleged that her husband gave her triple talaq just because she came home 10 minutes late.
The Muslim practice of instant talaq has been made a penal offence in the new upcoming law. Lok Sabha has passed the contentious bill but these incidents are still being reported time-to-time.
The woman who reported her triple talaq incident said, “I went to my mother’s home to see my ailing grandmother. My husband told me to return within half-an-hour. I was late only by 10 minutes. He then called me on my brother’s mobile phone and uttered ‘talaq’ trice. I was completely shattered by his reactions.”
The woman also alleged that her in-laws used to beat her up over their dowry demands, which could not be met by her family at the time of their wedding.
She alleged, “They beat me when I am home. I also had an abortion because of their torture. My family is very poor hence they were unable to give anything to my husband’s family.”
The victim has now sought government’s help in the matter. She has threatened to commit suicide if she does not get help from the government.
On December 27, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 was passed in the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session. The Bill criminalises the practice and catagorises triple talaq as a cognisable and non-bailable offence. The Bill is pending in the upper house Rajya Sabha.
