The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath announced soon to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj. Addressing the media at Circuit House in Allahabad,  Adityanath said, “In the meeting called to review the preparedness of Kumbh, a proposal was given by Akhada Parishad and others regarding changing the name of Allahabad district. UP Governor Ram Naik has also given his consent to the proposal.”

However, the Congress opposed to this, claiming that the name change would affect the history. As Allahabad has played a significant role since the days of Independence. Congress spokesperson, Onkar Singh said that the region where Kumbh takes place is already called Prayagraj. And if the government is so eager, they can make it a separate city, but the name of Allahabad should not be changed.

Singh further said, “During Gandhi-era and fight for independence, Allahabad has been a centre for inspiration. The city gave the country its first Prime Minister. Moreover, the Allahabad University would lose its identity as it would also be renamed Prayagraj University.”

BJP state spokesperson Manoj Mishra said, “The announcement which has come keeping in mind the sentiments of lakhs and crores of people of the state is welcome.” He further said in an official statement, “Akbar ki nishani ko mita kar pauranik naam dena shreyaskar hai. (To remove the sign of Akbar and give a historical name is good).”

The Chief Minister also spoke about the preparations of Kumbh Mela and said all pending work and projects in the district will be completed by December. People from more than 6,00,000 villages across the country will contribute during the Kumbh Mela. The CM said,” We are being given full assistance from the central government,”.
