90-year-old famous suspension bridge of Rishikesh ‘Lakshman Jhula’ was closed as an expert panel suggested that it was not in the condition to sustain anymore. A panel from the Public Works Department examined the carrying capacity of the bridge and concluded that it poses a potential threat and is beyond repair. Therefore, they suggested that the bridge should be closed.
On Friday, additional chief secretary of Uttarakhand Om Prakash said, “We observed the several parts of the bridge are in a very bad condition. The bridge should not be permitted for pedestrian movement from now onwards. The bridge is not in a position in a position to sustain anymore with such condition. We highly recommend this bridge be closed with immediate effect else some big mishap could take place.”
‘Lakshman Jhula’ used to swing slightly, due to which it got its name ‘Jhula’ (swing). Therefore, for the convenience of the visitors, another bridge named ‘Ram Jhula’ was constructed in the ’90s. The officials reportedly said that they are yet to take a decision on the dismantling of the bridge.
