Milk prices increase is because of costlier procurement. Since Milkfed and its affiliate Verka has old pouches, it may carry old prices till the pouches are out of stock. However, November 27 onwards, one will have to pay higher prices for milk in Punjab.
Verka, which is an affiliate of Milkfed also exports milk to the bordering areas of neighbouring states like Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. According to the sources, this will also have an affect on milk prices sold by milkmen in unorganised sectors.
Earlier, the Punjab State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Ltd (MILKFED) had increased procurement price of milk by Rs 10 per kilo fat.
Apart from providing best price to dairy farmers for their produce, the Verka was also providing best quality feed and supplements at economical price. The MILKFED sells over 26 milk and milk products under the brand name Verka. The farmers had been demanding a hike in procurement prices citing the reason that input costs had increased.
