Air India pilot suspended on charges of alleged shoplifting in Sydney

A senior Air India pilot has been suspended after he was accused of shoplifting at Sydney duty free on Saturday minutes before he was to fly back to Delhi.

Incidentally, the pilot had received a call at the airport from back home in Delhi that he had just become a grandfather. He operated AI 301 from Sydney to Delhi and was suspended on arrival here.

It came to light when Amrita Sharan, Director (personnel) at Air India was informed about the incident by regional manager Australiasia about the senior pilot’s conduct.

The spokesperson of Air India Dhananjay Kumar said that AI stresses very highly on conduct and acts of impropriety are taken very seriously.
There is a report about one of the captains Rohit Bhasin is accused of shoplifting. However, he is learnt to have said that he wanted to pick up gifts for his daughter-in-law and inadvertently took items without realising that he had not paid and by the time he realised it was too late.
