The Thiruvananthapuram MP of Congress had made a controversial statement by saying that if BJP wins 2019 Lok Sabha elections too, it will lead to the formation of a “Hindu Pakistan”; Tharoor summoned in court on Pakistan’s Independence Day

The Hush Post: Facing criticism for his controversial “Hindu Pakistan” jibe, Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Shashi Tharoor has been booked for “insulting the nation, hurting religious sentiments and distorting the secular fabric of the country.” And in a first, the court has allowed serving summons to Tharoor by social media like Twitter and Facebook.

A report said that a complaint under Section 153A/295A of the Indian Penal Code and Section 2 of The Prevention Of Insults To National Honour Act, 1971 has been lodged against Tharoor by a Kolkata-based lawyer Sumeet Chowdhury.

The petitioner alleged in his complaint that Tharoor has issued public statements whereby he has stated that if Indians vote for a particular party (BJP) in 2019 General Elections, it will turn India into “Hindu Pakistan” and will tear the Constitution of the country, the report said.

The petitioner further claimed in this complaint that the Thiruvananthapuram MP has even refused to apologise for his remarks which are in absolutely in bad taste, it was reported.

Chowdhury said in his complaint that it has hurt the religious sentiments of the people of the country, insulted the country’s Constitution, and has been intended to create great conflict and disharmony based on the religious divide.

The petitioner said that the Congress leader has also insulted Indians by comparing an “Islamic State” like Pakistan with a “Secular State” like India.

The Congress MP has also ignored the fact that India is a far superior nation compared to Pakistan, which most countries scorn and disdain, Chowdhury said in his complaint.

The court has asked Tharoor to appear before the court on August 14 in this connection. Interestingly, this day is Pakistan’s Independence Day.

In a first, the court has also allowed authorities to issue summons to Tharoor through his official and Facebook handles apart from regular process of law. Notably, it is probably for the first time in the history of Indian judiciary that a summon will be served through Twitter, the report said.

Shashi Tharoor had triggered a political storm on Thursday by saying that if the BJP wins 2019 Lok Sabha elections it will create a condition leading to the formation of a “Hindu Pakistan”.
