A 21-year-old college student hanged himself to death during a video call with his girlfriend in Barasat this Sunday. The police have seized the mobile phones of the boy and his girlfriend.

Ranjan Debnath, a third-year student of New Barrackpore College, was in depression after his father’s second marriage. His mother died long ago and his father left home three months ago. According to the sources, the boy was living with his grandparents and uncles at Baishali, Duttakpur.

Debnath used to call his girlfriend and share his mental state. Even on Sunday, he called the girl around 11 pm. The girl informed the police about Debnath’s mental stage and he kept telling her that he didn’t want to live anymore. Although she kept motivating him to be positive but he allegedly hung himself with a towel from a ceiling fan.

Even as Debnath was making a noose for himself the phone was on. Since there was no reply from the other end despite the girl trying to talk to him, she realised something was wrong. After that, she called a common friend who lived in Duttakpur. Sadly, Debnath’s family could only be informed during the wee hours of Monday. They broke the door and found him hanging. Subsequently, the police was informed.

“Talking to the people known to Debnath, we came to know that he was very depressed after his father got married and left him. We have registered a case of unnatural death,” said an officer at Duttakpur police station.
