The Hush Post: A prisoner at Kolkata’s Presidency Jail swallowed his mobile phone when the jail officials caught using it. The jail authorities hospitalised the inmate after he complained of pain in stomach.
The incident occurred on Monday. One Ramchandra is lodged in the jail for the last one year in a case of snatching and robbery. He immediately swallowed the mobile phone when the jail officials caught his using it. The jail authorities hospitalised Ramchandra after stomach pain complaints, a report said.
A jail official, wishing anonymity, said a surveillance team got to know that an inmate has a mobile phone.

“The surveillance team conducted a raid on Monday noon during lunch time. Ramchandra was spotted speaking on the device at a corner of the prison. As the team members chased him. He first tried to escape and when he realised he could not, he swallowed the phone,” said the official.
Unable to conceal his surprise, Minister of correctional services, Ujjal Biswas was stunned to know about this incident. He said: “I just cannot think of someone swallowing a mobile phone. I found it difficult to digest the information initially. I have ordered a detailed inquiry in the matter.”
The jail officials immediately rushed Ramchandra to the hospital as he soon reported having stomach pains. The officials took him the state-run SSKM Hospital late in the afternoon, the report said.
“An X-ray was conducted and confirmed the presence of the three-inch long mobile phone. At night, he was shifted to M R Bangur Hospital. Doctors expect that he should be able to expel the device through bowel movement. Else, he has to undergo surgery,” the jail official said.
