The minister of state for health and family welfare, Anupriya Patel presented a report in parliament on Friday, February 08. The data of the report showed that contraceptive use by males is most in Chandigarh. It is on the top of the list of all 29 states and 7 union territories of the country.

A total of 28.6% of male population of Chandigarh uses birth control measures like sterilization and condoms. However, Delhi and Punjab are next on the list with 20.2% and 19.5% respectively. The government data showed that the national average of usage of male contraceptives is 5.6% only. Andhra Pradesh (0.8%), Tamil Nadu (0.9%) and Bihar (1.1%) are states with least number of men undergone sterilization.

Although, the government has also done a great job spreading awareness amongst the public regarding the same. The government has enhanced the compensation for male sterilization. Also, a “vasectomy fortnight” was conducted by the government in November. But still the number of people adopting family planning and birth controlling measures is very less all across the country. The exposure of these family planning messages is higher for men than women. But still every three out of eight men believe that contraception is a women’s business. A man need not to worry about it.

Poonam Muttreja, executive director of Population Foundation of India, said that the male sterilization figures are still less because of the mindset of Indian men. Also, providing incentives won’t help until the mindset remains the same.

“We are still struggling with biases surrounding male sterilization. Gender is a huge factor and our focus is to create awareness.”, said  Manoj Jhalani, mission director, National Health Mission.
